What Are Hardwoods?

Our custom hardwood options are also sometimes called custom exotics because they are woods that come from trees that grow in all sorts of exotic locations around the world. Most of these rare trees grow in tropical climates and have rather spectacular features.

For example the purpleheart that comes from Brazil is famous for its deep dark purple color. Other woods like cocobola, bubinga, and wenge are know for their outstanding appearances and figures and luster of the wood grain. There can be quilting and ribboning patterns often combined with bright and dark color variations such as cherry red ranging to dark browns. Other options like ebony come in more of a subtle plain looking grain pattern but the wood is a satin dark black color. Teak is another valuable hardwood we can use and is know for its natural oily texture and its ability to resist rot and deterioration in even the most harsh climates and is highly demanded for marine applications.

Of course all of the woods we can provide are documented by the FSC and have to pass through customs to get into the USA and come from sustainable farming efforts that do not encroach on the rain forests of the world.

Over a quick consult we can decide what features and colors the customer might be seeking and then shop to see what is available at the time and put a price to it and offer a sample. Often since these woods are so exotic and rare they come and go in supply, but they are always in demand.

“A couple of years ago my wife and I went to Waikiki, Hawaii on vacation. One afternoon we walked through town when it started to rain very hard. We ran into an Urban Outfitters store to get out of the rain. My wife looked around and I looked for the closest chair. As soon as I sat down, I noticed how extremely comfortable the chair was and loved the wood and the smart design. When I got home, I called the store but they told me that they don’t ship to the states. I asked for the name of the chair and was told it was a Pioneer chair. Easily I found the company on the internet.

The reason that I wanted to buy these chairs was for a surprise to my wife. My wife grew up in east Europe and her favorite book was the Secret Garden. I was secretly building a Secret Garden on our hillside and I knew that she and everyone else would love four of the Pioneer chairs set around a Gloster round wood coffee table. The Secret Garden with the Pioneer chairs has been a huge hit with my wife and with everyone that comes to visit us.
